Feather Trees: A German Craft Renaissance

Customer Information  Contact    View Cart
Feather trees were first crafted in Germany over 100 years ago, due to declining and endangered forestland. They were recognized as an innovative - and lovely - substitute for a Christmas tree, which became family heirlooms as well. The Germans brought their trees and craft to America, where they were produced by Sears in the 1940's. Production was extremely limited after that, and even now the feather tree is still becoming known to Americans.

Prompted by our customers looking for traditional feather trees, they are now produced by Elizabethan Christmas. They require hours of craftsmanship, as one at a time, specially cut and colored feathers, called biots in the trade, are wrapped over thick wire to assemble a branch of the tree. Up to 12 feathers are used on our largest branches, with the wrapping done very closely and tightly to give the fullest, softest look possible. Other feather trees on the market will use less feathers, or a lesser quality feather, to reduce the cost of the feather tree. We choose to take more time, and the superior materials required, to produce an heirloom-quality tree.
